Chapter 7: Talking Back and Taking Flight

By 1915, the half-empty pews in the Portland church are a  miniature  of the big institutional picture. Will Eliot’s efforts to beef up the programs to bring in more men have had little effect except to accelerate women’s departures to more fulfilling venues. Some are seduced by Christian Science. Others leave the pews for the suffrage crusade. Even some of the faithful remnant eventually stage a revolt, fight for a voice in the church’s work, and prevail.
